It's been quite a busy summer...While the fall promices Howe Gelb, Lambchop and Nina Nastasia (woohoo). As a highlight of my summer I would like to point out the Belle&Sebastian's performance at Pukkelpop... and, Calexico's, expectedly, amazing show at rockenseine...

Indie rock is like pornography in a way: most people can't tell you exactly what it is, but they know it when they see it. Er, hear it. It's loud and obnoxious (or quiet and polite), careless and sloppy (or meticulously composed), complex and pretentious (or simple and unassuming), and, to its fans, cooler and more relevant than any other style of music.(Epitonic)
Lo-fi from "Low Fidelity" describes a sound recording which contains accidental artifacts, like distortion, or environmental noise, or a recording which has a limited frequency response. This stands in contrast to high fidelity or "hi-fi". Lo-fi music is a musical genre which uses lo-fi recording practices. The aim is to sound authentic, rather than over-produced. Many lo-fi artists use inexpensive cassette tape recorders for their music.
During the late '80s and early '90s, lo fidelity became not only a description of the recording quality of a particular album, but it also became a genre onto itself. The term came to refer to a breed of underground indie rockers that recorded their material at home on four-track machines. Initially, lo-fi recordings were traded on homemade tapes, but several indie labels — most notably K Records, which was run by Calvin Johnson, who led the lo-fi band Beat Happening — released albums on vinyl. Several groups in the late '80s, like Pussy Galore, Beat Happening, and Royal Trux earned small cult followings within the American underground. By 1992, groups like Sebadoh, Eric's Trip, Guided by Voices and Pavement had become popular cult acts in America and Britain with their willfully noisy, chaotic recordings. A few years later, artists like Liz Phair and Beck helped break the lo-fi aesthetic into the mainstream, albeit in a more streamlined fashion(Lo Fi music @last.fm).
Anti-folk, on the other hand, is a DIY folk movement, that originated in the mid-1980s in New York City, lo-fi aesthetics combined with lucid lyrics is what characterizes this movement...Some of the more important artists in anti-folk are Major Matt Manson, Moldy Peaches: Adam Green and Kimya Dawson, Toby Goodshank and Jeffrey Lewis, most anti-folk is under the wing of olive juice recordings...
Alt country, is basically country, only it doesn't involve a wife beating redneck (which is the general impression), but cute guys like Conor Oberst(Bright Eyes), and beutiful poetry like Jeff Tweedy's (Wilco)...It often includes experimenting with the traditional idea of what country should be about, best example for this is Howe Gelb(Giant Sand)...
And finally, Shakira is spanish...I think...

Macedonian weekend on Kanal 103!

This was the best weekend this winter, lots of interviews with many tres cool Macedonian musicians throughout the weekend, and some very amazing live acts!

So, between 6:00 pm-8:00 pm [lofidelica] this Sunday, there was a spontaneous freestyling on air, by RabotamNaSlucajot (Antonio Arangelovic) and his friends (Dzaka, Bruice, and another guy whose alias I can't remember).

Lofidelica interview:Sidney Alexis Lindner (Hotel Alexis)

And sometimes a girl would come and sit on one of the many benches and weep. And I was so sad that year and it just felt like this was somehow connecting with that sad part in people..."

The following interview will also be presented on air in Kanal 103 FM, in Macedonian, when doing the countdown of the lofidelica top 10 albums of 2005.

Sidney Lindner is the man behind Hotel Alexis, annoyed that most people find his surname difficult to pronounce, he uses Alexis instead. The "Hotel" comes from "The Golden Hotel" where his brother Cayce Lindner also plays. However, it was the title of this album which I found most intriguing...

What inspired you for the peculiar title of this record "The shining example is lying on the floor"?
I took the title from a biography of Keith Richards. I liked a lot of the images it seemed to convey. I’ve second guessed that title a lot as I’d want to do but I guess I thought it had this sense of wasted potential that I wanted to get across.

What sort of things inspire you the most, in general?
That’s really difficult to answer. I tend to think of inspiration as an unconscious activity or rather the tapping into an existing well-spring of unconscious build-up. There needs to be a “trigger event” that begins this movement upwards of compressed ideas – but the ideas have been formulating all along. And often your conscious mind wants to, and does, reject these ideas. They, like dreams, often seem ridiculous/dangerous to the conscious mind.
...That sounds kind of pretentious, but I think it’s true. Lately, I’m really trying to record even the things which seem really stupid or don’t make any sense.

Beside the fact that Sidney recorded his first albums on a friend's tape recorder, this album has been recorded in a high-priced studio (Zippah), so that he would finish it fast instead of focusing on silly details for days like he usually does, since he's an experienced sound engineer. However the album includes very old recordings, such is "Blue in the Blackout", or a hidden track among the long lasting final silence "Danny's in the rye".
Some of the people who have helped in realisation of this album are Gregg Porter, Kimberlee Torres (who sings in his other band Torrez) and Nate Groth, but also it is interesting to notice how his familly is involved too. Besides, his brother Cayce, their mother Barbara does the cover art...

What did your mother think of the music? How has she encouraged this affinity in both you and your brother towards music?
I think my mother is very proud of me and likes the fact that I’m creating something. She’s a really great visual artist. You know, my brother and I were never encouraged about music in any way. I think we probably came upon it on our own. What my brother and I have always had was a strong feeling of ‘it’s us against them’ and we have shared in the creation of a lot of secret worlds – one of which is musical.

Most people would count The Quiet Life among their favourite songs off this album. There is a part of the lyric which goes "Something so permanent lately, has died in you, and I know you weren't made for this, working the devil's work for free"

What is the devil's work?
The idea that there is good work to be done is something I’ve always given belief to. The idea that, given the right compensation, one might deviate from the righteous path and do the work of evil is a common one. A deal with the devil and all that. I think a lot of us get led off the path without any compensation at all – we just think that’s what we have to do to survive.

Concerning the lyrics, in another interview, Sidney quotes William Burroughs when saying that "Words are a disease", and indeed he uses strong words that create altering mental images, which adds to his powerfull music in general.
There seems to be some symbolic mentioning of a piano in a few songs (most notable is the one in Dapper Dan "Buy a piano, if you get sad, play just the black keys...")

Do you own a piano?
No. But I used to play the piano a lot when I was a kid, long before I played the guitar. When I was attending a Quaker boarding school in upstate New York I used to sit in the big empty meeting room and play the saddest little symphonies using only the black keys because I knew they would work together. And sometimes a girl would come and sit on one of the many benches and weep. And I was so sad that year and it just felt like this was somehow connecting with that sad part in people.

When I'd lent "The shining example is lying on the floor" to a friend, he claimed it put him straight to sleep and couldn't focus on the songs. On the other hand, there are parts in lyrics which go "And die in your sleep" that tend to freak me out, and I don't fall asleep that easily with it...

How do you usually fall asleep?
I usually read just before bed. Then, when I’m actually falling asleep, I generally picture myself in some sort of underground fortress. It’s very well protected and hidden and I can see out but no one can see in. It used be a sort of tank or rolling fortress but now it’s usually just a really secure underground office.

Sidney actually lives in Sadness (Dolores, Colorado)...

What is it like where you live? Would you prefer living somewhere else?
Well, I’ve been living in Colorado since July. Before that I lived on the East Coast in Portsmouth, New Hampshire for seven years. I always feel like I should be moving on. I struggle with that. This part of Colorado, the “four corners region” they call it because nearby you can lie in four states – Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico – all at once, is really cool. Huge sky and mountains and big desert vistas.

What is your reaction to the fact that people in Macedonia listen to your music and fall asleep with your words?
I love it. I’m grateful for it and pleasantly surprised by it. I actually consciously made this record to be one that you could listen to while going to sleep. I used to do that all the time, every night, and it bothered me when a record would have some quiet songs and then have a really loud song. I wanted to make a record that you could really drift off too. I didn’t think that people so far away would be listening.

Beside the common comparison between his music, and the quiet moments of Sparklehorse, great musical influences for Sidney are Richard Buckner, Vic Chessnut, Leonard Cohen, Fleetwood Mac, Red House Painters…

What have you been listening to mostly in 2005?
It’s been a weird year for me in a lot of ways and certainly in the way I’ve listened to music. I haven’t had the usual thing I get where I find something and listen to it over and over as much lately. I usually get really into stuff and then I burn myself out on it. I do the same thing with food. And people.

And finally a question that every average Macedonian, sadly, is occupied with since the beginning of December...

How will you spend the New Year's Eve?

I just felt I had to put Jeffrey in the list, even if it means to nudge out Sufjan Stevens, or Chad Vangaalen...His wit, charm and everything conquered my heart, unfortunately a bit too late to get any higher...
9.Stephen Malkmus-Face the truth (Matador)

This album was my number one in the very beginning of the summer. It is very playful, but also mature, kind of perfectly fits in the lofidelica Sundays...
8.Pernice Brothers-Discover a lovelier you (Ashmont)

"Snow" is probably a song I always play when Dj-ing. Other than that, the album works as a whole, there is some atmosphere-altering magic about it which I really like.
7.Hood-Outside Closer (Domino)

February/March/April somewhere around that period, I was really into Hood, electro-acoustic, whiny, and cold...The lyrics are brilliant. I was thinking between this, David Pajo's "Pajo" and Castanets' "First Light's Freeze"...
6.The Panics-Sleeps like a curse (LittleBIGman)

Makes me feel really good listening to it. Brilliant altogether.
5.Thanksgiving-The River (Hive Fidelity/Marriage)

Adrian definetly marked my 2005. At least in all of those (unsuccessful) attempts to get him to play here. His music is pure beauty. I quote: "He sounds like The Microphones (minus the drumming) vs. Will Oldham." Very young (19), talented and productive, I think he has released at least 3 albums this year, from which I chose "The river" as the best one.
4.Arizona Amp And Alternator-A.A.A.A (Thrill jockey)

This probably compensates for not being able to place M Ward's "Transistor Radio" in the top 10. Also a very important part of AAAA is Howe Gelb, whose amazing voice totally wooes me. The cowboy charm, different musical styles blend, and generally the whole fooling around among very very cool people, gets AAAA to number 4.
3.Bonnie 'Prince' Billy-Summer in the Southeast (Drag city)

The best Will Oldham songs in one place, and live! It reminds me of seeing him live in Italy, which was one increadible highlight of this year.
2.Smog-A river ain't too much to love (Drag city)

Each song here tells a story, listening to this album is like reading a book, or being alone with Bill Callahan, it's a very intimate experience, which I tend to set "on repeat".

1.Hotel Alexis-The shining example is lying on the floor (Broken sparrow)

Finally, Hotel Alexis. A background for most of the moments which made my year. To convert sounds into feelings is what I consider the biggest power of music. "The shining example is lying on the floor" makes me feel love.

Is it worth being an artist or an indie-rock star, or are you better off without it?"
Cause I mean maybe the world would be better if we were all just uncreative drones,
No dead child, hood dreams to haunt us, a decent job, a decent home,
And if we have some extra time we could do real things to promote peace,
Become scientists or history teachers or un-corrupt police at least,
"Come on Will, you gotta tell me!!" I grabbed and shook him by the arm,
The L train was leaning Bedford with 10,000 white 20 somethings crowed on
He opened his mouth to speak but it was lost in the rumbling of the weels
We were thrown together in a corner and I yelled "Tell me, man, for real!"
You're living comfortably, I assume, even if you're not quite a household name
You've reached a pretty high level of success & critical acclaim
The L train got to first avenue and a bunch of people piled out
I was starring into his sunglasses and I was really freakin' out i was like,
Steamboat Willie Bonnie Prince of all this shit, you're like the king of a certain genre
But even you must want to quit like if you hear a record by Bob Dylan or Neil Young or whatever
You must start thinkin' "People like me, but i won't be that good ever"
And I'm sure the thing is probably Dylan himself too stayed up some nights
Wishing he was as good as Ginsberg or Camus
And he was like "Dude, I'm such a faker, I'm just a clown who entertains
and these fools who pay for my crap, they just have pathetic punny brains
and Camus probably wished he was Milton too or whatever, you know what i'm sayin'?!"
So Will, will you be straight with me now that it's just us 2 on this train?
Cause I was gonna spend some time and money today to remaster some dumb old album
And I saw you here on the L train
And I was like "Hey, is that Will Oldham?" he must at least , have some perspective
Cause it's like, living in this town I get so confused &amp;amp; wound up & up tight
And I just don't know up from down
And then we'd reached the last stop and the subway was deserted
There was a long moment of silence and I let go of his shirt
I started to think that maybe I'd made some kind of big mistake
I tried to walk out onto the platform but by then it was too late
His sunglasses seemed to grow darker and still he hadn't even spoke
He just came right up behind me and put his hand around my throat
And threw me down onto the concrete and kicked my face in with his boot
And dragged me down onto the train tracks and tied my hands back with his coat
And I was slipping out of conciousness as he was slipping down my jeans
And he was punching me and humping me and I slipped off into a dream
So it might have just been a delusion
But I thought I heard him say something like "Artists are pussies"
Then he climbed back up and ran away
So I lay there in the darkness on the train tracks cold and broken
The hours passed and I thought,
Well... maybe I won't remaster that old album
And then I started thinking maybe it really hadn't been Will Oldham
Even though he did hold my arms and fucked me just like Will sings in "A sucker's evening"
But whether it was him or not I couldn't forget the words he'd spoken
"Artists are pussies", like we're wusses or we end up getting fucked
And other kinds of folks are dicks, tall, smart and strong
And born to fuck us up I know,
It sounds really sexist and stupid,
It's a terrible analogy but at that moment on the train tracks,
It made a lot of sense to me maybe it's just some kind of natural balance,
Like 2 types of mental gender that's gone on in all societies,
In one form or another like some dicks were born to conquer,
I probably would if I could but if i'm jut a pussy, that's okay
Cause in a few months maybe, I'll put out something good.

this is punk for indie kids, that has some fiddle too, and sometimes even goes folky. Jack Lewis is Jeff's brother...Most of the reviews I try to write about any Jeff Lewis album are crap, since I'm a very passionate fan, so I'd rather not say anything really...Buy it!

Winter Equinox-Safe and Sound (Crony)

I don't know where you come from, but in Macedonia we have immensly hot summers and freezing winters. In the winters the temperatures may drop down to -20C degrees, and there have been cases when we'd get extra winter holidays, because it is impossible to get to work/school with all the ice, snow, blizzard etc. However, there are also cases when the tempeture is -19C and you still have to leave the house. You can move 2m/min on foot, and cars are out of the question, while it is very very damn cold. Reaching home, in such days, has always been an extatic experience. The contrasting freezing-warm, the feeling of looking at the storm you've just got out of, through your window, wrapped up in some hot scarf, with a hot drink...Safe and sound. Now, that is the feeling that I get from this album. It is absolutely mesmerising. Winter Equinox come from Ontario(Canada), so I suppose it isn't much different there weatherwise. Apart from this ambiental description, Winter Equinox undoubtedly remind of Tortoise, glitching jazzy melodies (percussions, clarinet, bass) and electronica, to create 6 minute instrumental pieces (except on the closing Skies over smokestacks, featuring depressive vocals)...Other associations that come to mind are Hood, Gy!Be, Mogwai, Four Tet, Oliver Petkov (definetly, trust me.), Explosions in the sky, The London Apartments... The band consists of Lauren and Robyn Yakiwchuk (sisters), Dan Roberts, and Brad Weber. In only a week from now they will be playing live with Caribou (ex. Manitoba), and have already played with bands such as The Organ and Matt Pond PA. Highlights of this album include Scenic Caves and Shiny New Penny.

Opening with the lullaby-esq One too many itches, The Panics guide us into the plain, yet magical world of Sleeps like a curse. You can hope that I might, But I never feel a thing..The following, likewise titled, Sleeps like a curse builds a subtle pathway to My best mistake, the song that would work wonders in an indie-club. I really like it when i can sing along to songs with lyrics that are moving enough as it is...And I'm not really that sentimental. I hope. Like in every good album, after a powerfull, energy draining song, follows a slight sentimental comedown, in this case, Like an unwelcome guest."I'll keep you in my mind, like an unwelcome guest, I'll take my time with us...I hear dogs bark like distant drums"...Just as you start to fear this might be one of those albums where all the good songs are piled up in the beginning, Someone Somewhere Somehow starts:I echo all the words you leave, I only dress them up in mystery...Did I write these lyrics? Why are they so compatible with my mindset? Who are these people who call themselves "The Panics"? They appear to be a prolific australian band, that look on a photograph as cool, laid back and sweet as they sound. Such are the soothing soft vocals by Jae Laffer, with an additional hint of an australian accent...Apparently he met guitarist Drew Wooton in highschool, a friendship based on a similar haircut as he claims in an interview..Oh well, didn't Albarn meet Coxon thanks to their identical trainers?...To get back to the music, yet again, as nice and unpretentious continues through Twin Sisters and Minor A...I really like Speak it, first and foremost, the melody, the backing vocals (Jules Douglas?), one of those songs that feel like summer and lyrically make you think of winter If holding on to me makes you sad, Loosen any ties you have, Ill be moving on as best as I can ...will I slit my wrists before I finish writing this review? Probably...It's not a thing has a brilliant sing along chorus, "I lose my mind seeking signs." Nevertheless, no matter how nice this song is, I always wait for it to finish fast so I can hear The General Calling which is my personal highlight on this album. Sounds different than the rest, the singing is quite sad, the ambient is really moving...it's...I quote: "stuck in motion"...well it's stuck in my winamp all day...all week...all year. And this song is not the last, being my favourite it has the best possible position a favourite song could have on an album, it's second last. The album ends with Keep an eye on me...well technically it ends with an instrumental 1 minute ending untitled piece, but I would rather consider that as an extended part of the last song. With lyrics that symptomatically correspond with the feeling you get when you have to leave a person you love...It starts off describing a room...I love this album to bits. The Panics, my new favourite band

I spent this weekend in Belgrade at the annual Dis-Patch festival...Maybe it's me, but this year's festival was tad weak, and could not compare to what it had to offer in 2002, or 2003..
I saw My robot friend and Electronicat, and spent the rest of the Friday evening in the hallway drinking a beer and wondering how sounds resembling a small kid drinking a milkshake loudly can be considered as conceptual art.

Good news is that I met Anna B. there, who could possibly help me arrange a thanksgiving (Adrian Orange) gig in belgrade...oh yes! thanksgiving is willing to come to Macedonia on the 19th of November, hopefully should arrange the performance in a small intimate place called Saloon 19/19.

Arizona Amp and Alternator, or 4 A’s is one of Howe Gelb’s (Giant Sand) side projects which this time feautres M Ward, Scoutt Niblett, Grandaddy, Jeremy Gara (Arcade Fire), Marie Lorette Friis, Herniette Sennenvaldt...A sexy cowboy-esq “Hello darling” opens this record in accordance with the folky “I’ll keep you warm” feeling you get like a fuzzy bluegrass intro to the following surprise, an absolutely alluring jazzy, soothing bossanova tune, “Where the wind turns the skin to leather” in Howe Gelb’s manner and hushed-vocals. What follows is “AAAA”, a song you get in four different versions throughout the album, its lyrics alone could define Arizona Amp and Alternator’s sound much better than my review in fact “White man think you’re black, black one thinks you’re white, country man thinks you’re rock, and rockers say it just ain’t right, do you alternate their between, coming up with the best sound anyone has seen...and that’s my country.” Only well...it’s not really country...That’s the whole irony with AAAA appearing in completely different sound arrangements, and those exact lyrics. And that’s why I love Howe Gelb so much. Traffic’s cover Low spark of high heeled boys, is followed by “Man on a string”, a duet with Herniette Sennenvaldt, who’s worked with Gelb on his previous records (“The Listener”’s Torque(Tango de la Tongue)...Another quality duet is that of Matt Ward and Marie Lorette Friis on “Baby it’s cold outside”, additionally M Ward makes another appearance on one of the AAAA’s with Howe Gelb, where the music arrangement is the recognizable M Ward sound. The record finishes with a Recital (I think Scout Niblett’s) followed by intense drumming by Jeremy Gara on “The leaving you”, also somehow relating to Scoutt Niblett’s characteristic solo sound. All in all, AAAA offers a truly amazing, unique sublime of many talented artists, brimming with improvisation and charm. Fantastic for a band with “no members in it”(as stated in the sleeve).

This Sidney Lindner (Torrez, Golden Hotel, Northern) project could well be my number one for 2005. It was originally released in 2004 as a limited cd-r, but it's official date seems to be march, 2005...Anyway, not to be so pedantic, it is one of the most beautiful records I've been listening to, on repeat, since the beginning of the summer. It is the kind of an album which makes me cry and smile at the same time, creating mental images of an enormous, still, water surface...The slide guitars, combined with the utterly laid back vocals, and the powerfull lyrics will reveal this quiet undiscovered, or lost and forgotten part of you, which is perhaps why it seems all so magical...It is so brilliant that you can play it in the background and ignore it, and at the same time the lyrics are that captivating, that if you pay attention, you won't be able to do anything else really...'Something so permanent lately, has died in you...And I know you, weren't made for this, working the devil's work, for free'-The quiet life, or '..Buy a piano, if you get sad, play just the black keys, and die in your sleep, ain't this life sweet..'-Dapper dan.. Superwolf at Ypsigrock.it festival

7th of August, the evening, I had the chance to see Will Oldham and Matt Sweeney perform live in Castelbuono (Sicily) , a place with an architecture of a fairy tale...This concert opened the Ypsigrock festival, meant to last till the 9th of August featuring Ulan Bator and Patrick Wolf in the following nights. The venue was totally magical, a performance of Superwolf within remains of an ancient castle thoroughly captured the essence of the intimacy of this album...What I genuinely liked apart from everything, was above all, the warm welcome I got there, being the unique person from abroad, totally lost and confused.
First of all, I have to say I was also pleasently surprised by the powerfull sounding support band Poppy's Portrait, a band that sounded something like Shellac meets Sonic Youth...
Highlights of the Superwolf performance include: What are you, Rudy Foolish, Blood Embrace, Bed is for sleeping, My home is the sea, Beast for thee,and the wolf-esq howling which ended the performance...Some other things I found exciting were of course:the people asking me how is "Fuori" in English at the end of the concert, the camping located in a national park, me telling Will Oldham he made an amazing cover of Sweeter than anything by PJ Harvey, the beach in Cefalù...

Thursday morning I set off to a mountainy place Krushevo for a week, then I am going to Italy, so I won't be back in Skopje untill September.

As soon as I’m finally convinced that macedonian pop music is hopelessly dead, a few people come along to prove me wrong. Bei the fish, Robotek and Oliver Petkov are ones that come to mind. In a few days Oliver’s debut album French Radio Reporter is being officially released for Templum, book publishers that sometimes embrace kanal 103 FM recommended music.

Oliver is basically a charming guy from Veles, that apparently likes talking about himself in third person. He is also a Comparative Literature student that maybe has a lot to do with his weird sense of humour. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, he rips off Stereolab and The sea and cake...This is an e-mail interview I did with him somewhere around December 2004, before actually meeting him and working with him in the mutual Oliver’s geisha project.

Who is Oliver Petkov?
Oliver Petkov is a typical anti: hero, feminist, polish pope-ist...His weakness are the early winter mornings when he expects a parcel from Santa carrying a Pentium 4. Other weaknesses include: projects financed by NGO, he claims he never really got their point. He hates books with a beautiful cover and content because he is selling such to people with a not very attractive cover and content.
How do you make your music atmosphere-wise, and how long have you been doing this?Oliver actually believes in miracles. That is why he started making music a long long time ago. When after many attempts via liasons and corruption, he managed to get a B in maths, his parents bought him a guitar. So his musical beginnings are full of perpetual romance with a dangerous outcome. He makes his music at home, but it was never proved how exactly. It is assumed that he stays over in expencive hotels kneeling down a laptop and wishing to never leave the room. The scientists and former KGB associated with PASOK work hard to reveal his true identity.
Where do you find inspiration?
He always finds inspiration in bicycles. Once he said that if the album is of good quality then you can listen to it whilst riding a bike, without skipping once. The songs off French radio reporter have been tested with Pony Adriatic + helping wheels. It only skipped once actually...when a yellow Yugo 45A with register plates 345 AB ran into him.
What are your future plans(albums, songs, collaborations)?
His mother asked him exactly the same once...I don’t think the answer included any of the things mentioned in brackets.
How are you satisfied with our scene?
Generally we haven’t discussed that much. I don’t think he has a certain attitude towards scenes. But he likes the “our” in the question.
What is your album of the year?
It’s always been “Album of the year” by Faith No More.

As you can see he killed my interview, hence it never got really published.

Mercury Rev, the band that got kicked out of Lollapalooza in 1993 for their loud and “weird” music, played in Skopje tonight, and it was damn magical. Your lofidelica host got to interview Grasshopper (Sean Mackowiak), the lead guitarist.
We are located in kanal 103 during Lizzy&Mauricio show, it’s packed with lots of colegues, guests and Italians. Grasshopper seems to be hungry so my first Q is..
I’ve heard you make amazing spaghetti sauce, is that true?
It is! How do you know that!
These things spread really fast..what’s your secret? Recepie!
Well..fresh tomatoes is a good start, then a little olive oil, then you add basil and regano...now the secret ingredient is hot sauce, I add hot sauce called “Franks”...Finally you can add a little red wine as well.
Red wine...sounds interesting..By the way, what does “rev” mean? I know “mercury” has something to do with science..
The planet Mercury...you know...and it can also mean liquid metal..While to rev means when you step on the gas on the car, it can mean revolve, or revolution..and reve in french means to dream...so all those things...
You started off making music for films, how can you relate the visual with the sound?
They are very closely related actually... sound and music are vibrations and there are different spectrums of the waves, so music colours and images come together..there are times when Jonathan tells me, I want you to make a sound like a nest of bees going crazy, then that gives me a picture and I can do that, easier then play an E chord or something..
The material you recorded with David Baker as vocalist was much noisier, why is that? Was David into noise?
The thing is we were fighting a lot with Dave Baker so..The noise came from the combination, because we were always fighting, like storm ...
What was the biggest change during the recording of The secret migration compared to the previous albums?
The biggest change was that we recorded a lot of it ourselves and we had our own studio. We had to travel a lot to the other studios while recording All is dream and Deserter’s songs...This time, it was nice that we were kind of close to home.
What are your influences?
Well usually you can’t verbalize an influence, it’s something that is subconsciously implanted in you, like listening to the music your parents play in the car while driving...The first guitarists that come to mind are Neil Young, Robert Quine...I was also into punk rock when I was young, The Ramones,
Clash, The Gun Club..I listen to a lot of different music now, even jazz or classical..
What about the new american bands?
There is an interesting underground scene in America at the moment, but the problem is that it’s not put out that much, you can’t listen to it unless you’re living in a student town where you get student radios..A band I like a lot currently are Blonde Redhead..
My friend saw a “Joseph Campbell” sticker on your piano? How are you connected with the Joseph Campbell campaign?
Well you know, Campbell claims that in all mythology there are archetypes of different stories, there are always same stories that keep appearing in every culture, and we were interested in that philosophy..
Ok my final question..any thoughts on this radio station?
Ohh I like it..It looks very...
retro?
..Indie... most of the radio stations in America are commertial and they’re not as open minded..also this building looks interesting, I’ve heard the architect jumped off the top when he finished the construction.
Yes, he did...and I think I can understand why..
What about Skopje, what are your first impressions?
Well the mountains look very beautifull, tomorrow i’ll do a lot more walking, by my hotel there’s a river...And tonight i’m going to go out experience the night life..

Thanksgiving-Nothing-(marriage records)

Awful, ugly weather in Skopje, it's that moment when it's neither raining nor not raining..something in between, that can only give you a severe headache, I am making my way home from the radio station and sing quietly, but loud enough to make the people who pass me by give me these strange looks..I sing "now it is all oveeeer like the biiirds, now it is all oveeeer....". That maybe has nothing to do with Nothing, but it has to do with thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the alias of a sweet looking person called Adrian Orange, whose beautiful voice and sensibillity reminds of Cat Power, Smog, Will Oldham... Melancholic, suptle voice, clever lyrics and soothing relaxing guitar backup. A few weeks ago you were able to hear "Now it is all over like the birds" EP on lofidelica, this week's issue was dedicated to his LP called Nothing.
It includes 10 tracks called nothing i.e untitled, and quite short, the total time is less then 30 minutes, which I particularly like about albums like these. Adrian tours with Jona Bechtolt (yacht), who according to this "Is orange birds" compilation booklet, tours with devendra banhart...They both release for marriage records, a small indie label from Portland, that apparently releases music lofidelica likes. Nothing is recorded by Curtis Knapp (who also sings backing vocals) and mastered by Rob Jones. Finally, the cover is quite simple, it features a drawing of a strange creature that looks like a fish, an owl, a vase, it looks like...like nothing.

When it comes to Jeffrey Lewis everybody listens attentively, it doesn't matter if you're a trance, strokes, glitch, or an indie fan...His lyrics can soften your heart, stab fork-wise with striking precision in your intimacy..So I can't possibly not be completely subjective when reviewing him.
Before becoming a part of kanal 103 fm, I was such a crazy fan that i taped most of the programmes I liked. One of them was "Doli bese beatnik" (Dolly was a beatnik) that had the exact term that I have now, Sundays from 6 till 8 pm. Going through those tapes, months after I had recorded them, I totally accidently came across this fantastic song "The last time I did acid I went insane" by Jeffrey Lewis. Being a hardcore Moldy Peaches fan, I liked it very much. So much, that I played it over and over and over again. It was love at first listen (and I've never even done acid, but that hardly matters)...I enjoy seeing it happen to almost anyone that hears this song, it never fails to charm you completely, the lyrics, the voice, the music. Perfect. It seems a lot of people have gotten into Jeffrey via this song, hence he somehow became synonim for acid-antifolk..A fact which he doesn't seem to like particularly, hence he writes "No LSD tonight" that has it's place on this album I am listening to at the moment "It's the ones who've cracked that the light shines through"... He's this time accompained by his brother Jack Lewis (bass) and Andrew Griffen (drums).
Even though I can't say I like it as much as his previous stuff, "Don't let the record label take you out to lunch" has to be undoubtedly the best song title ever..Apart from that one, there are 12 other songs that walk on the line between a kimya dawson-ish harisma (Back when I was 4, Alphabet, You don't have to be a scientist to do experiments to your own heart) and weird acoustic punk (No LSD Tonight, If you shoot the head you kill the ghoul). To get the full image, Jeffrey's also good in comics, those low-fi NYC comics...I just hope one day we'll manage to get him here in Skopje.

About a few months ago, a friend of mine downloaded all of Sundays in spring releases (you see, they recently made cable internet possible here, in Macedonia, so the craze of downloading *everything* is only just begining to spread). So in a short time I was overpacked with mp3 label music..Starving but happy, Sundays in spring, Camomile releases...What really grabbed my attention were the two Sundays in spring amazing releases, Fauerbach’s “Ask us no questions and we'll tell you no lies” and The London Apartments’ “A dialogue of one”.
Today, in the mail, I received The London Apartments’ new album “Romanticism Aside”, released, this time, for Sounds of Pop. The first thing I notised by studying the envelope was that “The london apartments” is actually the name of Justin Langlois’ street address, while he is from Kingsville, Ontario. But I’m sure he’s mentally from Reykyavik. The whole sensibility of “Romanticism aside” is sort of iceland-ish, words like “cold”, “wind”, “december”, “frozen”, “jacket” are manipulated in the heartbreaking lyrics, while the music is like múm and sigur rós have decided to join up in one band. Justin’s highly sensitive and shy vocals, the lo-fi electronica touch accompained by acoustic guitar and piano create a very calm, soothing and yet sad atmosphere. Likewise, the booklet features black&white photography of old houses, doormats, floors, windows, closing it with “these streets are frozen shut, as I move my heavy feet, everything seems in its place”. You can hear this album online, or you can listen some of it on Lofidelica this Sunday.

Punk's not dead!...

Indeed...!!!(chik chik chik) with 'Louden up now', in their own way managed to make peace between Disco and Punk, this time Matmos' Drew Daniel (aka The Soft Pink Truth) achieves the same, possibly even more succesfully with his new project "Do you want the new wave or do you want the Soft Pink Truth?". He revitalises the punk sensibility witha glitch-housy-disco-clashy outcome. The title is a modified title of Minuteman's ballad "Do you want thenew wave, or do you want the truth?". In this project Daniel covers underground punk legends such as Die Kreuzen, Minor Threat,Rudimentary Peni and Crass, isolating the lyrics that are flogged in the typical noisy punk distorsion, by putting them in a completely cheerfull disco musical context. The result is again punk.You get Minor Threat's "Out of step" reinvented into a tech-popanthem with Dani Siciliano singing "Don't smoke/ Don't drink/ Don'tfuck/At least I can fucking think."Other guest vocalists include Blevin Blectum (in "I owe it to thegirls" by Teddy&the Frett Girls), fashion designer Jeremy Scott(in "Media Friend V.S.B" by Rudimentary Peni), as well as Drew's Matmos fellow Martin Schmidt singing Nervous Gender's controversial offensive lyrics -"Jesus was a cock-sucking Jew from Galilee/Jesuswas just like me"(Confession) over electro-clashy handclaps. Likewise ironically the homophobia in the Angry Samoans' "Homosexual" is incorporated into a gay-esq acid pumping "hands in the air" disco hymn. Finally, the 48 second lasting Styne and Robin's Broadwaytune "Lookin Back" symptomatically closes this album with "It's nicelooking back at the past/ Full of memories that last/ Souvenirs of alife that was fast and fun/ Now it's done."

I guess Frank Sinatra really is dead. I sometimes get a feeling that New York is a completely independent universe. Maybe it’s because I’ve never actually been there, so I am prone to idealise it...I just can’t deal with the fact that 90% of the bands “of the now” come from one single city. !!!, The rapture, The Liars, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fiery Furnaces, Radio 4, LCD Soundsystem, with DFA and Out put recordings as ultimate trend setters. And as if it isn’t enough, the whole god damn anti folk scene is breeding in this exact city. It’s just plain unfair. Think of Cat Power’s attractive live performances, Moldy Peaches’ turquoise afro-haired Kimya Dawson. Jeffrey Lewis who inevitably gets related to acid induced insanity, Olive Juice recordings releasing the most open-minded indiependent lo-fi sound..I want to die in New York.
So anyway, another interesting figure in this scene is this one-man band, a bearded bloke who plays a lot of instruments/toys breathes loudly in the microphone and apparently wears fluffy slippers during his performances. It’s the one and only Douglas Black aka The Purple Organ. Nothing but a typical New York lunatic, in the most positive sense of the word.
This “Amoebawness” release I have in front of me features 10 songs. All equally noisy, lo-fi, with lyrics concerning girls with too much yeast and the art of female ejaculation, afganistans and religion (?-Eglise du shite). With interesting lyrical combinations (Madonna&Dead Kennedys) and a total instrumental trash-concept (with Mr. Mark Ospovot as the mastering guy). Additionally the loud breathing into the microphone gives a particular dimension to the sound, as well as the quasi-ending-to a sentimental ballad screaming. My compliments on “Fuck” which has been released as a vinyl as well, this song is probably the most meaningfull song, bearing this increadible contradiction, musically intended to be a single concerning its length and melody, but lyrically goes all the way “anti”. Another stand out, is the closing “it was a bug” which also has been included on the Unicorn Sounds v.1 compilation (disc 1), along with my previously mentioned Kimya Dawson, Jeffrey Lewis, and Adam Green with his Friends of mine hit single “Jessica Simpson”. Douglas has also contributed to some other compilations, the Luv-a-Lot compilation released for Olive Juice recordings features a song that isn’t included on Amoebawness, called “Shark”. And this very very powerfull and emotional sounding song “Cutting up teen sluts” is incuded on “Rotten to the core”, among other halloween inspired songs. To my surprise neither is this song included on Amoebawness.
Finally, I should mention the cover design, which is bascally the first thing you notice when you purchace this release. It looks increadibly “lo-fi”, with handwritten tracklist and incoherent scribbles in the credits intended area, smiley’s, *’s and tiny drafts like those you make when you’re on the phone for too long. So in a way, the chaotic design is an equivalent to the chaotic music.

Language is the most coherent expression of what you are, that is why learning foreign languages becomes so exciting. Being able to think, speak, mean, dream, make love in a foreign language is like playing roles or becoming someone else just for the occasion. Using the foreign language to artistically express yourself is what Ronda experiments with in their latest project “Je suis un etranger”. This is a compilation featuring artists with different backgrounds using vocal samples spoken in a language which is supposedly unknown to them. That way they can focus on the melody and rhythm of the words, and not be distracted by the meaning. You can hear :Polish (mils), German (dDamage), Swedish (transbeauce), Portuguese (lucky.R), Hungarian (aka_bondage avec a.valo+a.oszo+v.dirkev+m.torre), Albanian(sun plexus + loner),English(silencio), French(dscl), Japanese(xerak), Russian(c.h.district), Breton(depatie), Chinese(displacer),Arabic(do shaska! avec mr marmela), Norwegian(bleetch), Vietnamese(seb.R), Dutch(hypo & musicometre)...Not only that these artists come from different countries, but also different scenes (electro, rock, musique concrète,...)

Listening to The robot ate me’s On Vacation is like meeting Dr.Jakyll/Mr.Hyde. This schizophrenia is spread over 2 discs. On disc one you meet the experimental, lo-fi, pretentious yet amusing trio, with Ryland Bouchard’s tender vocals, this time singing lucid lyrics about Jesus and Hitler making out in the back of a taxi...and their tongues twisted and tied...While on disc two, The robot ate me remind you of what they were like when you first met them on They ate themselves: sensitive, caring, soothing, easylistening and well, pop (something that Grandaddy, Thrills, The Elected, Havergal etc. fans might like). On Vacation was originally released for Swim Slowly in February, 2004, but reissued for 5 Rue Christine/Kill rockstars on 22 March, 2005...maybe it was disc 1 that attracted 5CR/KRC having in mind bands that release for these labels (Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, Gold Chains, Outhud etc..)...or maybe because they’re from San Diego...Anyway the best thing is that both Dr.Jakyll and Mr. Hyde turn out to be very very promicing in different ways, and well are worth hanging out with for a while...so check out On Vacation...(you will be able to listen to both discs on Wednesday, 6th April, from 00 to 02am GMT+1 on kanal 103 fm-Midnite Vultures or at http://www.kanal103.com.mk live streaming )
